JOURNAL ENTRY

Writing a diary entry is a task often asked in the Written Production section of the French test. Here you have some tips to familiarise yourself with its layout and some vocabulary and phases that you can use.

Important tips:

  • To ensure that you respond as you are being asked, thoroughly read the question.
  • Learn these opening and closing phrases that you can use every time.
  • Get familiar with the layout, which includes the date, "cher/chère/...", and sign off.
  • You need to use several different verb tenses to show your command on these.
  • Write In the first person ('je' form).
  • Employ words and phrases to convey your feelings.
  • Remember that even if you find it difficult to express a certain sentence or message, there is always another way to express it.
  • Often, the question will instruct you to write approximately 75 words. Hence, avoid giving a lengthy response as you will make more mistakes. You should nevertheless make an effort to show off your abilities. Hence, striking the appropriate balance is crucial.
